AI maturity assessment:
know where your company really stands

An AI maturity assessment places your organisation on a clear scale, then points to the initiatives that matter. This guide explains how to run it, how to read your maturity level, and how to turn the diagnosis into an executable roadmap. Written for SME and mid-market leaders.

What is an AI maturity assessment?

An AI maturity assessment evaluates an organisation's ability to adopt and embed artificial intelligence. It examines four dimensions — data, skills, processes and governance — then translates them into a level and priorities for action. It is the prerequisite for any roadmap.

In other words, it answers a simple question before any budget is committed: where do you really stand, and where should you begin for a measurable result. A good assessment does not just produce a score. It names the two or three highest-impact initiatives and sets aside the ones that can wait.

At YPrtnrs, this evaluation is called My Pulse. It takes about a dozen questions and gives an instant result, before any investment.

Why assess before launching an AI project?

Because the leading cause of AI project failure is not technology, it is scoping. Launching an isolated use case without a baseline often leads to a pilot that never reaches production. An assessment aligns ambition, means and priorities from the start.

Most leaders skip this step and start with a tool. The assessment reverses the order: it begins with your organisation, not a solution, and makes the first project defensible to an executive committee.

What AI maturity levels can you be at?

AI maturity reads as a score out of 100, placed in four levels, from least to most advanced: Emerging, Promising, Advanced, Leader. You move from AI that is endured and scattered to AI that is steered, measured and value-creating. Placing your level avoids aiming too high too fast.
1Emerging. Individual, scattered uses, no strategy or shared framework.
2Promising. First use cases and pilots, often without measurement or structured follow-up.
3Advanced. Use cases in production, governed and connected to key processes.
4Leader. AI is measured, industrialised, and feeds strategy and new sources of value.
The four levels tell you where you are. The YPrtnrs ECTA model tells you how to move forward: each phase of the journey, from Explore to Accelerate, is scored and places your level. That is what links the diagnosis to action, and what the next section details.

How do you assess your company's AI maturity?

You assess AI maturity through the four phases of the YPrtnrs ECTA model: Explore uses and culture, Capture the high-value use cases, Transform the processes involved, Accelerate industrialisation and measurement. Each phase is scored; together they place the company in one of the four levels and reveal the next step.
E · Explore
Real uses, culture, available data.
C · Capture
High-value use cases, prioritised.
T · Transform
Processes, skills, governance.
A · Accelerate
Industrialisation, measurement, scale.
My Pulse applies this model automatically. You answer, the evaluation scores your four ECTA phases, calculates your level and surfaces the next initiative. Y, your AI Chief of Staff, guides you through the results.

AI maturity assessment or AI audit: what is the difference?

A maturity assessment evaluates your overall capability and places you on a scale, to decide where to begin. An AI audit examines existing systems (data, models, compliance) in detail to check their soundness. The assessment comes first, the audit applies to an already-engaged scope.

How much does an AI maturity assessment cost?

An entry-level assessment is often free or low-cost; value lies in the execution plan. At YPrtnrs, the My Pulse evaluation is free, and the Blueprint, the costed 90-day execution plan, is €1,890. The real cost avoided is misdirected projects.

Against the tens of thousands a poorly scoped AI project represents, a serious assessment is the most profitable investment of the journey. For full ranges, see the guide "How much does an AI project cost".

What does the result contain?

A good result holds three things: your maturity score and level among the four, the two or three prioritised initiatives with their rationale, and a first estimate of expected gain. It must be readable by a leader in minutes, not reserved for specialists.
The My Pulse result leads naturally to the Blueprint: the 90-day roadmap that costs, sequences and assigns each initiative. From diagnosis to execution, with no break.

Is my company ready for AI?

The right question is not whether you are ready, but where to begin without risk. A company at the Emerging or Promising level almost always has a usable foundation, provided it scopes a first useful, measurable initiative. The assessment answers exactly this, in ten minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an AI maturity assessment take?

A structured evaluation takes ten to fifteen minutes to complete. Analysing the results and building the roadmap that follows takes a few days.

Do you need technical skills to run it?

No. The assessment is for the leader and business owners. It talks about uses, priorities and value, not technical architecture.

Does it work for an SME as well as a mid-market company?

Yes. The grid adapts to size and sector. Priorities differ between a service SME and an industrial mid-market firm, but the assessment logic is the same.

What happens after the assessment?

The result feeds the Blueprint, your 90-day execution plan. You know what to launch, in what order, with what expected gain and who steers it.
