NUGGETREFLECTION
Reflection — The AI you buy is no longer an edge: your competitors have the same
AI tools have commoditized: every company buys the same models from the same vendors. The tool alone no longer confers any competitive advantage. What sets apart the 6% of companies that create real value with AI (outperforming their market by roughly 9 points of shareholder return over three years) is not the AI they bought, but their ability to embed it into the specific economics of their business. The edge no longer lies in the technology; it lies in an execution capability no competitor can buy.
For a small or mid-sized company, that shifts the first decision: before comparing tools, identify the asset your competitors don’t have (your proprietary data, your processes, your domain know-how) and make it the reusable foundation the AI plugs into.
