NUGGETREFLECTION
Reflection — Your biggest AI risk isn't the tool you pick, it's the one your teams use without telling you
The share of security incidents involving shadow AI — unsanctioned tools that employees adopt on their own — more than doubled in a year, reaching 43% of data breaches, and more than two-thirds of organizations still have no process to govern it. The lesson holds for any company: real AI usage always runs ahead of its governance, and banning it only pushes that usage out of sight. The answer is neither blocking nor looking away, but a sanctioned tool that is safe and genuinely better than the personal ones, paired with a clear rule on what data may be entrusted to it. Any small or mid-sized firm is better off first inventorying the AI tools already in use internally, then publishing a one-page rule on the approved tool and the data never to paste into it, before launching any larger project.
